The Rhys Davies Short Story Competition 2014 is now open for entries

The Rhys Davies Short Story Competition has been revamped for 2014, with the inclusion of a brand new Under 21 Prize, and an increased total prize fund of £5,000. The 2014 competition will be judged by Cynan Jones, Deborah Kay Davies and Gee Williams. First prize is £2,000. Additional prizes are £800 for second place, £400 for third and six runners-up will receive £100 each.

The Under 21 Prize will be judged by Rachel Trezise. First prize is £1,000 and the runner-up will receive £200.

Emily Wilding Davison Centenary: writing competition

A national writing competition has just been launched as part of the Emily Inspires! programme of events to mark 100 years since the death of Suffragette Emily Wilding Davison from injuries sustained when struck by the King’s racehorse at Epsom Derby and to commemorate her Northumberland roots. The writing competition is run by audio entertainment site listenupnorth.com in partnership with Northumberland Libraries.

Judges include writers Wendy Robertson, Michael Chaplin and Janet MacLeod Trotter. There will be first, second & third prizes for both national and best of Northumberland entries and the winning entries will be read out over the Emily Inspires! Open call for submissions for new books by North East and Yorkshire and Humberside-based writers for Read Regional 2013

Deadline for submissions Monday 4th March 2013

This is an open call for publishers and writers to propose books for inclusion in the 2013 Read Regional campaign.

 

We are looking to include a variety of books in our 2013 campaign and welcome submissions of fiction, writing for children, poetry and creative non-fiction. Books must be available as paperbacks by the beginning of August 2013 and authors must be available to participate in at least four events across the North East and Yorkshire between September 2013 and April 2014. Run in conjunction with over 20 library authorities across the north of England, the Read Regional project connects writers to readers via libraries, festivals and bookshops. The campaign will feature a set number of books that will be promoted heavily between September 2013-April 2014.

 

All participating libraries purchase bulk book orders and receive supporting marketing campaign materials. A range of marketing materials are produced to promote the project: A Read Regional magazine featuring author interviews and extracts from the books, bookmarks, posters and reading guides for selected books.

 

The project is a great way for publishers to launch new authors or for authors who are looking to build their profiles and extend their readership. We are looking to work with authors who are keen to work with libraries and to be flexible and enthusiastic about joining in with a variety of events. Previous authors involved with the campaign include Stephen May, Ann Cleeves, Dan Smith and Fiona Shaw.

 

Submitted books must be by a writer who currently lives and works in the north east of England or Yorkshire. You can check the regions, as defined by funders Arts Council England, at www.artscouncil.org.uk/who-we-are/working-in-the-regions/. 
 

How to submit

If you would like to submit a book for consideration, please send the following:

• A copy of the book (or proof copy/manuscript – electronically is fine)
• Information on the launch date
• Any notable review coverage
• A cover image
• A biography of the author and details about their place of residence
• Information on the publication date and on any PR plans or author events that are already in place
• Cover price of the book

The small print

The organisers do not accept submissions of self-published work and cannot include e-Books in the campaign.

If a book is selected for the campaign they will expect to purchase copies for 50% of the cover price. Please do not enter a book for submission if it will not be possible for you to supply at this price.

The selected books will be decided by the end of April 2013.

The winners of the short story competition have been announced. Congratulations to all those who have been longlsited, shortlisted and won! The quality of entries was extremely high and Clare Morrall found it very difficult to choose between them. Their anthology of the shortlist will be published in February 2013.
They hope you'll be entering their short story competition again when it is launched later this year.

Young Writers Wanted for Journal Opportunity

Are you a young writer, 15-19, would you like to see your work in print in The Journal newspaper? If so, you might be interested in this fantastic opportunity from New Writing North and Juice Festival.

To tie in with one of the themes in this year's Juice Festival, the organisers are looking for a story on the theme of DRAGONS. So whether you’re inspired by knights of the round table and damsels in distress, or would like to take a rather more metaphorical angle on the theme, they can’t wait to read your work. Your story must be between 1,750-2,000 words long and have a 'dragon' theme. Stories should be sent as an attachment to laura@newwritingnorth.com, accompanied by a 50-word biography. The deadline for entries is Friday 12th October 2012.

The Wicked Young Writers’ Award, established by the long-running West End musical Wicked, today presents its free Wicked Young Writers Assembly featuring Michael Morpurgo, former Children’s Laureate and award-winning author of War Horse. 

The unique creative writing resource for schools is designed to motivate and inspire original ideas for writing within the classroom. The videos show Michael Morpurgo discussing his creative process, an exclusive talk with Wicked cast members Rachel Tucker and Chloe Taylor, plus an exclusive reading of Outlaw: The Story of Robin Hood (Harper Collins Children’s Books) by Michael Morpurgo.

Michael Morpurgo says of the Wicked Young Writers’ Award: “With the encouragement of their teachers and families I hope the excitement of the Wicked Young Writers’ Award will see original and creative writing coming through and hopefully instill in them a passion to become the authors, script writers, poets and dramatists of the future."

The webcasts are accompanied by a bespoke curriculum-linked creative writing resource developed in association with the National Literacy Trust. The downloadable frameworks explore the writing process and suggest possible themes and approaches support teachers in bringing together a variety of work on narrative with the view of entering pupils’ pieces of writing for the award.

Now in its third year, the “prestigious award” (The Times) recognises excellence in writing, encourages creativity, and helps develop writing talent in young people between 5-25 years old nationwide. The Award is spearheaded by Michael Morpurgo, receives patronage from HRH The Duchess of Cornwall and works in partnership with the National Literacy Trust.

The Wicked Young Writers’ Award is separated into five age categories as follows: 5-7, 8-10, 11-14 and 15-17, and an individual Gregory Maguire Award for 18-25 year-olds.  Young people from across the UK and Northern Ireland are free to submit entries to enter a piece of writing on a theme or subject of their choice, written at home or at school.  Teachers are encouraged to enter writing on behalf of pupils through a schools’ entry form and online Teachers’ Resource featuring exclusive video tips for inspiring and encouraging writing in the classroom.

The Ted Hughes Young Poets Award 2012 is now open for entries.

Poems should be no longer than 40 lines.

Entry for the Ted Hughes Young Poets Award is free of charge, but each poem should be accompanied by an entry form.

The prize for the poetry competition will be awarded on Friday 19th October at The Ted Hughes Festival 2012.

Stylist magazine launches crime competition with Faber and Faber

Stylist magazine has joined forces with publisher Faber and Faber to find a writer who they believe is going to be the next big thing in crime fiction. The plotline could be anything, from grizzly serial killer to eerie suburban murder. The only requirements are that it must fall within the crime/thriller genre and that it has to feature a female protagonist (it isn’t just men who can solve crime, after all).
