The winners of the 7th
international Welsh Poetry Competition 2013 were announced earlier this
month. First prize was awarded to Josie Turner for her poem 'Rations'.
Competition judge, Eloise Williams, said of the winning poem: "I’m
not sure there are enough superlatives to adequately praise this poem.
Stunning, touching, moving, fascinating, beautiful…The poem, succinct in
form, is far larger than its lines. Revealing itself more with each
reading we are given a glimpse of the relationship between three people.
'Rations' touched me profoundly and I want to read more."
Second Prize was awarded to David E. Oprava for his poem 'Sleep is
Mending' and third prize went to Gill Learner for her poem 'The
Moneychanger and his Wife'. Eloise also chose another seventeen poems
for the ‘specially commended’ section. All winning poems and judges’
comments can be viewed on the Welsh Poetry Competition website.
