Writers’ Day 2012 at The Dylan Thomas Centre

Some of Wales’ brightest writing talents, alongside key members of the publishing industry, will be gathering at Swansea’s Dylan Thomas Centre on Thursday 17th May for the third annual Writers’ Day - an opportunity for all those interested in the literary scene to share tips, thoughts and opinions about the writing life and its pleasures and challenges.

This free event, organised annually by the creative writing departments of Swansea University and University of Wales Trinity St David, Carmarthen, will feature a range of exciting authors, editors, and agents who all have invaluable experience to share. The event kicks off with an appearance from author and broadcaster, Jon Gower, who will be launching his brand new short story collection, Too Cold for Snow (Parthian, 2012), followed by agent Euan Thorneycroft, from literary agency AM Heath, talking about what’s in, who’s out and what’s going to happen to publishing in the digital age, Editors Gwen Davies (New Welsh Review) and Fiona Sampson (formerly of Poetry Review) will be sharing advice about getting your work published in magazines, while winner of the T.S. Eliot prize, Philip Gross will be reading from his latest collection.

Event organiser, Dr. Fflur Dafydd of Swansea University said: “This is the third time we have held this event, and we are extremely proud of how the event has flourished, and how it brings together aspiring and established writers in a convivial environment where there is plenty of opportunity to chat, glean advice and share experience. This year is set to be the best yet and people are advised to book early to avoid disappointment.”

Two new creative writing anthologies will also be launched during the day, Tongues, the work of creative writing students from Trinity Saint David, and the online magazine, Swansea Review, which features brand new work from students and staff at Swansea University, as well as established writers.

Following the Writers’ Day, Fluellen Theatre Co will present extracts from drama by Swansea University MA students, in the second of two ‘Rough Diamonds’ evenings.

- Science-Fiction Writing Workshop
Wednesday 16 May, 7.00 - 9.00 pm
Science-fiction author Paul D. E. Mitchell will share his experience and knowledge of building sci-fi novels, with special attention to settings in this particular genre.

- Crime Writing Workshop
Thursday 24 May, 7.00 - 9.00 pm
Crime author Belinda Bauer will lead a practical workshop on writing plots for crime fiction and will reveal how to write fascinating beginnings and endings. Please Note: This workshop is now fully booked - contact Literature Wales to add your name to the reserve list.

- Modern Romance Writing Workshop
Wednesday 30 May, 7.00 - 9.00 pm
Join writer and reporter Jo Carnegie to explore the art of modern romance writing and learn how to create a whole range of specific characters for romance novels.

The workshops listed above are free to attend but places must be reserved in advance. There are limited places available for each workshop.
