World Book Night, April 23rd 2013 - The Books

World Book Night are very proud to announce their 2013 list of titles - 20 brilliant books by amazing writers. We hope you like it as much as we do, see some old favourites but above all enjoy discovering what might become new favourites. Alongside some of the very best fiction and non-fiction they've also included two firsts - a graphic novel (Judge Dredd) and a Quick Read (Last Night Another Soldier...).

Application to be a giver has also opened and will close on 23rd January 2013, but they would encourage you to apply as soon as you can. Quite simply, the earlier you apply the more likely you are to get your first choice of book!

They've also relaunched their website to offer a much better experience to all their users. It's now mobile friendly (and easier to get round on your computer too) and they have lots of tips for helping you fill in your application and decide how you want to take part in World Book Night. If you have any questions please consult their FAQs.

The books are:

'The Secret Scripture' by Sebastian Barry

'Noughts and Crosses' by Malorie Blackman

'Girl with a Pearl Earring' by Tracy Chevalier

'The Eyre Affair' by Jasper Fforde

Nominate the books you want to see on the World Book Night 2013 list

It's now nearly four months since World Book Night 2012 and we're turning our thoughts to plans for 2013. We want to know which books you want to see featured as next year's World Book Night books.

Like last year the final list of books for 2013 will be decided on by an independent editorial committee made up of representatives from booksellers, libraries, the literacy sector, authors, and journalists, and will this year be chaired by Mariella Frostrup.

The committee's choice of titles will be informed by the hundred most nominated books so be sure to tell us what books you want to see featured.  You have until
August 31 to nominate your books and you can see a live and constantly evolving top 100 now.

This year we really want you to think about the books that you think will make those who don't regularly read fall in love with reading as well as the books that you love the most.

What are we looking for?
  • Quite simply, great books that make you fall in love with reading (and what we think makes a book great is quite different to what academics or critics might)
  • Any genre of book – fiction or non-fiction, crime, thrillers, romance, sagas, sci-fi, fantasy, classics, literature, poetry, biography, young adult – anything! But we are looking for 'best in class' in each area
  • They have to have a story (so any non-fiction has to be narrative driven)
  • Not too long (though we will never rule against a book based on length but shorter books are more accessible)
  • Must have been published in paperback in the UK
And please don’t nominate books or authors that were featured in World Book Night 2011 or 2012. You can see the 2012 list here and the books that featured in 2011 here.

How do I submit my favourite books?
1. Go to http://www.worldbooknight.org/
2. Sign in or register via our homepage
3. Go to 'nominate books' under the 'books' tab and type your favourite book by title or author in to the search box.  If your book doesn't show please double check that you've spelled it correctly.  Books that are out of print or aren't available in paperback won't come up when you search for them
4. You can keep an eye on the titles you selected and view a live, interactive list of the top 100 here

Happy voting!

Happy World Book Night!

Happy World Book Night!

Today across the UK, Ireland, Germany and the US almost 80,000 people will give over 2 million books to spread their passion for books and reading in their communities and encourage new people to fall in love with reading.

In the UK and Ireland, 20,000 givers including the Duchess of Cornwell and Stephen Fry will be giving specially printed copies of the 25 books. There are givers all across the country from the Shetlands to the Channel Islands and almost every populated corner in between. In addition more than 70,000 books will be going in to over 110 prisons for prisoners as well as their families (to enable shadow reading) and staff.

This year the books include an extract from another book recommended by the author to encourage recipients on to their next, as well as a Shakespeare sonnet chosen by poet Don Paterson to celebrate our greatest writer's birth and death day.

How you can celebrate
  • Tell everyone you know about what books and reading mean to you (as well as about World Book Night). If you're using social media, follow us on twitter @worldbooknight and use #worldbooknight to follow today's activities. On facebook you can like us and join in the conversation - we're asking everyone to share their favourite book as their status update to spread the word.
  • Give / share your favourite book with someone today
  • Visit your local library and bookshop. Join your library, ask your librarian or bookseller for a recommendation, buy or borrow an amazing new book you'd never otherwise have discovered.
  • Celebrate this evening at one of the hundreds of events taking place around the country from author readings to quizes and parties as well as candle-lit readings or you can watch our flagship London event live streamed on your computer. SImply login or register for an account and follow the link from the homepage this evening. Event starts at 7.15pm.
2013...
Many people are already asking about how they can sign up to be a giver and get involved with World Book Night 2013 as well as what the titles will be and which new countries will be celebrating. We won't be announcing anything for 2013 till later in the year but you will be one of the first to know, and if your friends and family want to stay up to date please tell them to join our mailing list

We hope you have a very happy World Book Night!
